What will do as a volunteer at LCM? Great question! See below to find your perfect fit to our volunteer team.

General Volunteer

Age Requirement: High School Freshman to Age 102

Do you want to give to the community? Do you want to volunteer, but don’t know exactly what you want to do? Perhaps you would like your volunteer experience to vary day to day? If you thought “yes” to any of these, then the Louisiana Children’s Museum General Volunteer position might be for you! A general volunteer operates in the vital position of being able to fill a gap when needed. One day, it might be helping us clean up after a storm. Another day, it might be leading games in our courtyard. You might even be called up to help administration prepare for fundraising events.  We ask that general volunteers have a willingness to perform a wide variety of duties. Volunteers who have a desire to learn are a plus. Lastly, LCM volunteers must have an interest in helping children learn about the world around them.

Arts & Culture Volunteer

Age Requirement: High School Freshman to Age 102

Do you wish you could spend your days creating things out of pencils, markers, or paint? Has music always helped you get your groove on? Perhaps you always wanted to plan your own city? If you answered “yes” to any of these, then being an Arts & Culture Volunteer at the Louisiana Children’s Museum is the opportunity for you!  An Arts & Culture Volunteer aids the Director of Arts & Culture and our gallery assistants in setting up and maintaining the following galleries: Studio in the Park, Jammin’ House, and Make Your Mark. In the Studio in the Park, you facilitate play as you allow children to express themselves via a variety of media. You will also have the chance to lead learning opportunities as you guide children in activities such as sewing or paper making. In the Jammin’ House you allow children to express themselves via musical instruments, perhaps leading musical education sessions. In Make Your Mark, you might ask children the relevant questions such as “How close should the houses be to the water? Where should the library exist?”  To be an Arts & Culture Volunteer, we ask that you have an interest in art and/or music. A deeper knowledge of art and/or music is also appreciated. Willingness to learn is a plus. Lastly, LCM volunteers must have an interest in helping children learn about the world around them.

Health & Wellness Volunteer

Age Requirement: High School Freshman to Age 102

Do you enjoy playing outdoor games? How about gardening? Or, do you have an interest in food and love to know how the food reaches our table? A “yes” to anyone of these means you might enjoy being a Health & Wellness Volunteer at the Louisiana Children’s Museum! A Health & Wellness Volunteer aids the Director of Health & Wellness and our gallery assistants in setting up and maintaining Follow That Food, outdoor games, and the Edible Garden. In Follow That Food, you facilitate play as children learn about the route food takes from our recreation of the Port of New Orleans, through our miniature grocery store, onto our stoves or into our ovens, and finally onto our plates. A Health & Wellness Volunteer sets up and leads games in our courtyard at regularly scheduled times. In the Edible Garden, you will be assisting the Director of Health & Wellness or Master Gardeners in maintaining the Garden as well as bringing the children along a flavor—filled lesson on plants that garnish popular dishes.  To be a Health and Wellness Volunteer, we ask that you are willing to spend time outside leading games or gardening, have an interest/knowledge in gardening, and an understanding of New Orleans food.  Lastly, LCM volunteers must have an interest in helping children learn about the world around them.

Sustainability Volunteer

Age Requirement: High School Freshman to Age 102

Did the Mississippi River, with all its locks and levees, always interest you? Do you love animals from the largest elephant to the smallest insect? Do you generally just love the great outdoors? When reading this, if you pictured yourself outside, in waterproof overalls, surrounded by animals, then being a Sustainability Volunteer at the Louisiana Children’s Museum might just be the opportunity for you! As a Sustainability Volunteer, you aid the Director of Sustainability and our gallery assistants in setting up and maintaining Dig Into Nature, Move with the River, and our Toddler Landscape. In Dig Into Nature, you will be helping children explore the swamps of Louisiana in our pirogue, letting them earn veterinary degrees as they learn about animals in our animal hospital, or letting them see things microscopically as you operate our powerful microscope. In Move with the River, you will facilitate play as children follow the great Mississippi River from its source in Minnesota to its termination in the Gulf of Mexico. Our Toddler Landscape brings the fun outside, whether it’s our outdoor version of the Mississippi River or outdoor play kitchens.  To be a Sustainability volunteer, we ask that you have an interest in nature, ecology, biology, and/or animals. Volunteers who have a desire to learn are a plus. Lastly, LCM volunteers must have an interest in helping children learn about the world around them.

Playologist

Age Requirement: High School Freshman to Age 102

Do you like nature? Animals? Working with children? Do you like being artsy? Playing games outdoors? Do you just generally want to work in a place filled with laughter and children whose faces exude curiosity? If so, then being a Louisiana Children’s Museum Playologist might be the right fit for you! Instead of being focused on one area, Playologists cover a wide variety of areas from facilitating outdoor games to leading art lessons, to maintaining our miniature grocery store, to facilitating our giant bubble station. A Playologist rotates through our five galleries, assisting where needed.  We ask that Playologists have a desire to learn. Volunteers who have a desire to learn are a plus. Additionally, LCM volunteers must have an interest in helping children learn about the world around them.

Edible Garden Volunteer

Age Requirement: 18 to 102

Are you passionate about gardening? Do you neighbors envy how your flowers turn out every year? Do you enjoy teaching children about various plants? Perhaps you’re a certified Master Gardner? A simple “yes” to any of those means that you might enjoy being an Edible Garden Volunteer at the Louisiana Children’s Museum! As an Edible Garden Volunteer, you will be facilitating regularly scheduled educational activities in our Edible Garden. Additionally, you would maintain a tidy garden.  We ask that Edible Garden Volunteers have experience in gardening. Being a certified Master Gardener is a plus. Volunteers who have a desire to learn are greatly appreciated. Lastly, LCM volunteers must have an interest in helping children learn about the world around them.

Nature Guide Volunteer

Age Requirement: 18 to 102

Do you like long walks through nature? Do you like taking others on long walks through nature? If so, then you might make a great Nature Guide Volunteer at the Louisiana Children’s Museum! Requiring additional training, a Nature Guide Volunteer will take children and their parents on a walk of discovery as you point out various parts of nature that make Louisiana unique. We ask that Nature Guide Volunteers be knowledgeable in Louisiana wildlife. Volunteers who have a desire to learn are a plus. A Master Naturalist Certification is preferred. Lastly, LCM volunteers must have an interest in helping children learn about the world around them.

Holiday/Summer/Break Camp Volunteer

Age Requirement: High School Freshman to Age 102

It’s (insert relevant school break) again! Do you want to help children have the most fun and most educational (insert relevant school break) break? Then you should be a (insert relevant school break) Camp Volunteer! Camp Volunteers assist during camps for children ages 4 to 8-years-old. Volunteers enthusiastically facilitate exploration and play during museum exploration time (in galleries) and assist with facilitated programs in the camp room, as well as some assistance with setup/cleanup. We ask that camp volunteers are available from 8:30 am – 3:00 pm. Volunteers who have a desire to learn are a plus. Lastly, LCM volunteers must have an interest in helping children learn about the world around them.

Group Volunteers

Age Requirement: High School Freshman to Age 102

Group size requirement: 5+

Do you and 5 of your friends want to volunteer together? Perhaps you’re a youth group that is looking to give the community? Does your organization or company require you and your compatriots to volunteer? If so, consider volunteering as a group at the Louisiana Children’s Museum! As either a recurring group or a one-time occurrence, group volunteers perform the same tasks as our individual volunteers, just with friends. As a group, you all might be cleaning up after a storm or spread throughout our facility facilitating play with children.
