Join our team of volunteers!

All volunteers must at least be 14 years old (and currently enrolled in 9th - 12th grade). Those 18+ will be required to pass an LCM-provided background check. All must attend an interview, tryout day, orientation, and commit to a minimum of 40 hours.

We understand that people are busy and that is why we strive to be as flexible as possible. During a normal operating day, you are welcome to volunteer between 9 am and 4 pm. If you can volunteer all day, no problem! If you can volunteer part of the day, no problem!

To begin, visit our opportunity directory and find a position that interests you and fill out the application. If selected, the next step is a group interview. These are held on the weekends. If you pass the interview and still want to volunteer with LCM, the next step is to attend a tryout day. This allows you to see if you enjoy volunteering at LCM, and it allows us to see if you make a great addition to the LCM team. If you are over 18, you will then need to submit for a background check, If the interview and tryout day goes (and if you are 18+, the background check) goes well, the next step is to sign our General Release Waiver, Drug Free Workplace Acknowledgement, and to read and sign our Volunteer Handbook. After that, it’s a two-part orientation. Part one is a meet-and-greet where LCM’s policies and procedures are discussed. If you are under 18, your caregiver is invited to attend. A week later, part two involves safety and security, how to interact with children, and multiple scenario discussions. Then, you’re all set to be a volunteer!

Yes. LCM uses Volgistics to track volunteer hours. If a volunteer needs to show proof of service hours, the Volunteer Manager can draft a service letter on company letterhead at the appropriate time. For volunteers who need a service letter, or letter of recommendation, they are required to have volunteered for a minimum of 40 hours before such a letter can be drafted. The Volunteer Manager is also familiar with the variety of service hour trackers used by schools in the New Orleans area. Lastly, volunteers who reach certain milestones are recognized for their service.

Individuals who have been inactive for more than a year, will be required to go through the application process as your previous file no longer exists. If you turned 18 since the last time you volunteered, you will be required to submit for a background check.

We do. You can fill out a group application. Groups are welcome to be a one-time occurrence or a regularly returning group.

We understand that people are busy, so we ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of 40 hours. Additionally, volunteers are required to go through an annual refresher. Volunteers who fail to undergo the annual refresher will be marked inactive, after a year of inactivity, the volunteer’s file will be deleted.

Oh yes! When wearing their LCM apron, volunteers receive a 10% discount at Acorn Café and in our Museum Store. Volunteers have access to their own volunteer room. We treat our volunteers with the same appreciation we treat our staff, so volunteers have access to the staff breakroom (tea, coffee, refrigerator/freezer), and select staff events. Those volunteers who achieve Volunteer of the Month or donate a certain number of hours, are recognized for their service as well. Volunteers who reach 40 hours may join LCM’s Volunteer Council. Members of the Volunteer Council help decide the direction of LCM’s Volunteer Program.
