What’s New This Month

December Playtime

Thursday, December 5 and 19 at 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.: Sensory-Friendly Playtime 

We offer a playtime for families that provides a low-sensory experience where children with sensory-specific needs can explore the Museum without the noise, crowds, and stimulation of typical open hours. We limit the number of families who can attend, turn down sounds and lights, and provide adaptive equipment such as noise-reducing headphones and weighted vests. When available, specialists will be on hand to help facilitate activities and provide resources. If you would like to participate in this event, please register.

Friday, December 6 and 20 from 3:00 p.m. – 4 p.m.: Food Science Friday

Join us in Follow That Food for fun kitchen experiments.  These projects will teach you concepts in various learning areas like science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and art. Guests will get to engage with food in an all-new way.

Saturday December 7 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. Ever-Greens in the Garden

Join us in the Edible Garden to learn that there’s a lot more to greens than just eating them. Guests will be invited to explore the world of leafy greens through observation and hands on activities that engage all of our senses. This will be a great opportunity to see how food goes from garden to plate and beyond! 

Tuesday December 10 at 1:00 p.m.: In Dialogue: Navigating Difficult Family Situations with Dr. LeAnne Steen

InDialogueis offers monthly online,interactive sessions with health professionals and experts who will discusstopicsthat impact children and families,including parent-child attachment, gun violence, screen time, eating habits, and so much more. Register to attend this event live via Zoom. The sessions are also recorded and offered as a curated library of resources for our community.   

Fridays, Beginning December 13: Artist in Residence Sari Jordan

Sari Jordan (they/them) is a vocalist, songwriter, and musician based in New Orleans and originally from New Jersey. Sari’s artistic process and vision is one of whimsy, flexibility, play, and introspection. Sari has always felt at home making music with children, drawn to their natural curiosity, daring, creativity, and emotional expression. Check out Sari’s music wherever you stream and discover live performances. As an LCM Artist in Residence, Sari will facilitate musical exploration and produce an emergent collection of songs. Their programming spans many topics, including sampling & experimentation, movement, voice, lyrics as poetry, the blues, and improvisation. Sari is looking forward to connecting with museum visitors, exploring music at and around the museum, and co-creating the sounds and ideas that will come together in the first ever LCM album!

Saturday, December 14 at 10:00 a.m.: Master Naturalist Nature Walk

Join us in our big backyard as we go on a nature walk with one of our Louisiana Master Naturalists.

Friday, December 27 from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Winter Wiggle Party

We will have a special cozy Pajama Day with pajama story time at 11:00  a.m. and cozy holiday treats. Did we mention that it will be cozy? From 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m., we will have a PJ Parade that ends in a Winter Wiggle Party featuring our Artist in Residence, Sari Jordan! This special Winter Wonderland Day is included in general admission tickets or your LCM membership.

Sunday, December 31 from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Noon Year’s Eve

Don’t miss our annual Noon Year’s Eve celebration!Join our famous countdown to NOON on Tuesday, December 31st that culminates in an explosion of colorful confetti and bubbles. Guests can get into the holiday spirit by making their own noisemakers and designing a festive paper bag hat. There will be music, face-painting, dancing, games, and fun for children and adults of all ages!  Noon Year’s Eve event pricing is $15 per person for members and $25 per person for non-members and $8 for those eligible for our Museums for All program. Tickets are available now!

Did you know that $5 from each ticket sale will be contributed to our Play Power programming? Play Power is an embedded outreach program in four local public schools that empowers children to heal, grow, and develop through play.

Explore Our Big Backyard with a Louisiana Master Naturalist and learn about the amazing animals and plants that call LCM home!

Peace Weekend: A Celebration of Dr. King’s Legacy 

Saturday, January 18 and Sunday, January 19  

Join us for Peace Weekend: A Celebration of Dr. King’s Legacy on Saturday, January 18 and Sunday, January 19. We will have special guests join us to read about the life and lessons of Dr. King and other wonderful books such as Amanda Gorman’s Change Sings.   

On Saturday, January 18 at 1:30 p.m., performers and culture bearers Mama Jamilah and Baba Luther will guide us through Bamboula 2000’s Imagination Tour. Join us as we travel to the African Diaspora via Imagination Airlines. We will drum, dance, sing, and learn about our connections to our African Ancestry and the cultures that make New Orleans the cultural mecca that it is today.  Our Peace Parade will follow Bamboula 2000’s performance at 2:00 p.m.    

On Sunday, January 19, we will continue our special story times and practice peaceful yoga together at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday January 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Lunar New Year Celebration and Cultural Exchange with Xavier University’s Chinese Program

Join us for a fun and interactive Lunar New Year Celebration kickoff and cultural exchange led by members of the Xavier University Chinese Program! Learn about the Lunar New Year traditions of China and Taiwan with an informative presentation and activities for the whole family. Let’s welcome 2025 together and the new year of the Snake! 

Lunar New Year 2025 is January 29 to February 4 

Come wish a loved one health, happiness, and good fortune as we celebrate Lunar New Year, also known as Tết in Vietnam, and in our local Vietnamese community! Each new year presents us with new joys and challenges, and the symbolic zodiac animal each year inspires us to reflect on its special traits and gifts. 2025 is the year of the Snake, representing wisdom, intuition, and transformation. In which ways will you share your luck with your friends and family this year? Bring your best new year’s wishes to our Studio in the Park for our Lunar New Year interactive art activity where you will also have an opportunity to share your own Lunar New Year traditions or learn about the new year traditions that stem from parts of China, Vietnam, and other Asian countries that observe the Lunar Calendar!

Saturday January 25, 4:30p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: New Year Nutrition Workshop

Parents and caregivers are invited to join us for a fun and interactive workshop on healthy eating in the new year!  We will be joined by a registered dietician, Mary Catherine Francis.   

Thursday, January 30 from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.: Sensory Friendly Caregiver Peer Support Group,  via Zoom

Parents and caregivers of children with sensory needs are invited to join our peer support that will take place the fourth Thursday of each month via Zoom.  Contact us with questions.
