Reports To: Volunteer Manager, Sustainability Director, Education Outreach Coordinator 

Department: Education 

Status: Intern 

Compensation: For-credit only 

Duration: Approximately 16 weeks 

Schedule: Flexible, Tuesdays preferred

Position Summary 

The Environmental Education Outreach Intern will support the organization’s mission through community engagement, sustainability, stewardship, and resilience. They will assist in building the capacity of a water literacy outreach program for the GNO area and gain valuable skills and experience. Under the museum’s Education Department, they will support the IMLS-funded Living with Water program by assisting with the preparation of program materials for classroom visit and museum field trips, creating and piloting STEM-based lessons, and choosing an independent research topic to report on at the end of the semester.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities (will vary on a case-by-case basis) 

  • Promote the culture and brand of LCM. 
  • Support the IMLS-funded Living with Water education outreach program according to the program timeline.  
  • Creating and piloting STEM-based activities and lesson plans for various water-related exhibits (indoors and outdoors) for LCM based on the LA State Standards. 
  • Assist with 3rd grade class visits to participating schools. 
  • Assist with organization of lesson supplies and materials before and after class visits. 
  • Assist with preparing the museum-space before and after school visits. 
  • Completion of reading assignments and corresponding written reflections based on professional development and education topics.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Junior or Senior in college in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or related field, OR has recently completed such degree. 
  • Ability to work efficiently without close, constant supervision. 
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Fluent in English (multi-lingual is a plus). 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours. 
  • Ability to produce quality work in a close, team environment. 
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check. 

 

Desired Qualifications 

  • Experience or interest in education. 
  • Experience working with children and families is a plus. 
  • Academic background in life or environmental science (biology, ecology, conservation, geography). 
  • Self-starter; takes initiative. 
  • Problem solver; ability to adapt on the fly. 
  • Strong time management. 
  • Detail orientated. 
  • Ability to accept critical feedback and willingness to continually improve. 
  • Ability to acquire new technical knowledge with ease. 
  • Ability to address professionally challenging situation and can work through them.
