Children’s museum gets a new home

March 1, 2017

In late 2018, the Louisiana Children’s Museum will close the iconic blue doors of its downtown New Orleans location and introduce a new state-of-the-art complex in the heart of New Orleans City Park. By striking partnerships with local organizations and building new facilities — including an event lawn, a literacy center and an exhibit recreating the flow of the Mississippi River, the space will serve as a local child development resource hub for parents and kids alike.

On Wednesday, January 25, the Louisiana Children’s Museum announced details on its upcoming City Park location. The groundbreaking for its new site will take place in 2017, according to the museum officials.

The $45.5 million campus is designed by Seattle-based architecture firm Mithun. Waggonner & Ball will serve as the local architects for the project.

The Louisiana Children’s Museum has secured the funding for its long-awaited move to City Park, a $45.5 million project expected to be complete by 2018.

Museum, park and city officials on Wednesday formally announced that the project’s financing goals had been met, a few weeks after planners invited construction firms to submit qualifications for the work. Construction is expected to begin later this year.

The Louisiana Children’s Museum’s long-anticipated move2016-11-17_LCM_Perspective_Final to New Orleans’ City Park appears to be on track, with qualifications for construction bids for the $38 million facility due in two weeks.

The museum has been situated in the Warehouse districts since its founding more than three decades ago, and the move to City Park is aimed at offering more opportunity for children to experience the outdoors, with the new building slated to go up alongside one of the park’s lagoons.
